What is a submerged aerated filter sewage treatment plant?
A submerged aerated filter (SAF) is a fixed-film biological wastewater treatment plant for businesses and communities. Its proven design combines energy efficiency with a low carbon footprint.
The Rewatec SAF is uniquely engineered for projects serving 25 to 600 people. Our solution features a robust glass-reinforced plastic (GRP) tank, a long list of customizable options, and final effluent of impressive quality:
- BOD = 20 mg/L
- TSS = 30 mg/L
- NH4-N = 5 mg/L
- Nitrogen removal = 62%
- Phosphorus removal = 50%
Where are our SAF sewage treatment plants used?
The Rewatec SAF sewage treatment plant is most often a solution for:
- residential developments
- hotels and inns
- leisure facilities
- camping and caravan sites
- restaurants and cafés
- schools
- office buildings
- industrial sites
How do our SAF sewage treatment plants work?
The Rewatec SAF sewage treatment plant includes three stages: primary settlement, aeration and biological treatment, and final settlement. Wastewater passes through these stages via gravity, integral airlifts, or pumps.
Primary settlement
In typical installations, wastewater flows into a primary settlement chamber that allows liquids to separate from suspended solids. This chamber is designed to manage flow and load fluctuations.
Aeration and biological treatment
Inside the aeration and biological treatment chamber, microorganisms grow on floating biofilm media. They feed on organic wastewater pollutants, producing effluent composed of biomass particles and treated wastewater.
Our plastic biofilm media are specifically shaped to increase the surface area on which microorganisms grow. This maximizes their ability to treat wastewater and minimizes the size of the reactor. This, in turn, reduces the overall footprint of the treatment plant.
Aeration is made possible by a diffuser fed by blowers in the system's kiosk. The diffuser produces bubbles that continuously mix the chamber's contents to ensure optimal contact between wastewater and microorganisms.
Final settlement
After biological treatment, wastewater flows into the final settlement chamber. Solids accumulate at the bottom of the chamber and a recirculation pump directs them back to the primary settling area. This process enables partial nutrient removal. The system then discharges treated wastewater via the outlet pipe.
