What is a passive disinfection filter?
Passive disinfection filters offer solutions for residential properties with impermeable soil, where treated wastewater cannot seep into the groundwater below.
Installed downstream from our sustainable Ecoflo compact biofilter, Rewatec passive disinfection filters (FDi) provide final treatment to wastewater before safely sending it into a watercourse or ditch.
Results meet the strictest effluent standards, protecting your property and the surrounding environment for years to come.
How do our passive disinfection filters work?
Ecoflo compact biofilter
The passive disinfection filter is installed downstream from our Ecoflo compact biofilter, the most sustainable septic solution in the industry.
Wastewater passes through the compact biofilter, percolating through an all-natural filtering medium that traps and removes pollutants. Treated wastewater is then sent to the passive disinfection filter for final purification.
Passive disinfection filter
The layout of the passive disinfection filter is simple: it contains a horizontal sand filter that slopes slightly downward to a recirculation station.
A distribution system scatters wastewater across the uppermost portion of the sand filter. Wastewater then flows down the slope, slowly spreading across the entire surface of the sand.
This filtration process removes residual pollutants, ensuring that only disinfected wastewater reaches the recirculation station.
To guarantee that untreated wastewater never contaminates the property, the sand filter is installed on an impermeable membrane that separates the system from the site’s natural soil.
Recirculation and final dispersal
When wastewater reaches the lowest portion of the sand filter, it enters a polyethylene recirculation station.
The pump inside the recirculation station is silent during the day. It discreetly runs for less than seven minutes each night, pumping some wastewater back to the uppermost portion of the sand filter. This maintains stable moisture levels in the sand, which is important for system performance.
The remaining portion of wastewater is safely sent into a ditch or watercourse for final dispersal.
